VC acquires rescue mannequins for Power Line Worker training

Students in Victoria College’s Power Line Worker training will now be able to better simulate rescuing a coworker in distress while high atop the ground.

The Victoria College Foundation has purchased two 175-pound power line rescue mannequins through an Alcoa Foundation Capacity Building Grant. The two Buckingham Manufacturing mannequins, which cost a total of $4,276.88, will be used during simulated rescue scenarios.

VC began partnering with Victoria Electric Cooperative in 2016 to conduct three levels of Power Line Worker training.

“Safety is so important when you’re a lineman working on an energized line,” said VEC General Manager Blaine Warzecha. “If something happens to you, you want to make sure you will be rescued by your partners. So whether you’re climbing a pole or working out of a bucket truck, it’s good to have that feeling of security that someone will be able to get you down and aided.”

“These mannequins are amazing for students to learn the safety aspect of individual rescue,” said VC Industrial Programs Director Dwayne Maly. “They will help put students in simulated emergency situations.”

VEC has recently hired two graduates of VC’s Power Line Worker training.

“We are able to hire someone who already has the experience and knows what they are getting into. It saves us in hiring costs,” Warzecha said of the training. “It gives students an opportunity to learn what it takes to be a lineman and the environment they will be in before they actually make that jump.”

Victoria College’s Workforce & Continuing Education Department will host Power Line Worker Training Information Sessions on Tuesday, Nov. 28 in Room 226 of VC’s Emerging Technology Complex. A day session will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an evening session will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.
